Clinical Case
Patient-Specific 3D Liver Transplant Model | Cella Medical Solutions
This case involves a 37-year-old female patient, who acted as a living liver donor, donating her left hepatic lobe to her 11-year-old son, the transplant recipient. The case highlights how patient-specific 3D modelling provided significant clinical value in analysing and planning a highly complex living-donor liver transplant.
3D Surgical Planning for Living-Donor Liver Transplantation
Given the complexity inherent to living-donor transplantation, Dr Gustavo Aguilar Ruiz, Consultant Hepatopancreatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Hospital Herrera Llerandi (Guatemala), decided to support preoperative planning using a Cella 3D anatomical model
The medical team was able to preoperatively simulate lobar resection to assess total, resected and functional liver volumes, ensuring adequate postoperative performance of the hepatic remnant. In addition, precise identification of anatomical variants proved highly valuable in anticipating procedural challenges and approaching surgery with greater confidence, enabling the resection and anastomoses to be performed exactly as planned.

Surgical Outcome
Following a successful transplant procedure, Dr Aguilar stated: “The 3D model was truly useful. We worked with both intraoperative ultrasound and the 3D model, which greatly supported surgical planning.” The outcome was an efficient procedure with excellent results for both the donor and the recipient.
Special recognition is given to Dr Rodolfo Asensio G., responsible for microsurgical arterial reconstruction, and Dr Rudolf García-Gallont, President of the Hospital’s Board of Directors and Consultant Transplant Surgeon, for their key contributions to the success of this intervention.
